Model farm for regenerative agriculture

Regenerative agriculture restores soil health, protects biodiversity, and provides nutritious food. To promote sustainable farming practices and create attractive jobs in agriculture, we have established a model farm at Akasha Academy headquarters in Suntakhan. We establish practical approaches to organic farming and use the farm for educational workshops for the local community.

In short

Status:

Ongoing since 2023

Location:

Suntakhan, Gokarneshwor, Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

Participants:

Farmers, farm workers and students

Organized by:

Long Yang NGO, Akasha
Academy NGO

Why regenerative agriculture is important?

47%

of the land in Nepal now has low organic matter content, meaning that the long-term health of Nepal’s agricultural land is severely compromised.
[Agricultural Technology Center]

1-2%

of soil organic matter increases annually when regenerative practises are applied.
[University of Washington]

10-30%

increase in crop yields has been reported by farmers after switching from conventional to regenerative agriculture. [McKinsey]

Testimonial

“Many people living in Kathmandu have land outside of the city. With the model farm, we can easily attract all kind of people who want to grow good food and implement sustainable farming. Through the participants and students of our education programs, we can easily spread regenerative approaches of land use in the area.”

Situation in Nepal

Poor soil health and high vulnerability for climate change

The effects of climate change are pressing in Nepal. A combination of political, geographical and social factors lead to a particularly high vulnerability (Nepal is the 4th most vulnerable country for effects of climate change globally). Extreme droughts, flooding, landslides and erosions threaten the Nepalese population, especially those who live in poverty or in remote areas.

Conventional agriculture, unplanned infrastructure development and land plotting contribute to the environmental destruction and loss of biodiversity. The use of chemical fertilizers is very common, leading to a long-term deterioration of soil and food quality.

Our aim

Healthy soil to support all life

Soil plays a vital role in life on Earth. It stabilizes the ground, provides us with food, filters water, stores carbon dioxide, and is home to countless species and microorganisms. Through regenerative agriculture we aim to restore soil health and provide healthy food while protecting natural resources essential for our survival.

Healthy soil delivers richer harvests over generations without the need for chemical fertilizers and supports biodiversity and consumer health. Practices such as biointensive agriculture help maintain yields during water scarcity, increasing climate resilience.

With the regenerative farm we also support local communities by creating jobs and promoting sustainable practices that can raise farmers’ incomes through higher-quality produce and increased crop yields.

Our approach

Creating conditions for sustainable change

The model farm provides the opportunity to test and optimize agricultural techniques on a smaller scale. It also enables to hire local farm workers. The methods are demonstrated for the local population through workshops, enabling them to apply these sustainable practices themselves.

Some of the methods we use:

  • Organic seeds and proper soil preparation
  • Regenerative and biointensive farming techniques to grow vegetables, fruits, and herbs
  • A composting system that provides natural fertilizer from kitchen waste
  • Production and use of organic fertilizers
  • A biogas plant that generates gas from cow dung and organic waste

Where we need your help

We are grateful for the support we have received from our past funders, including companies such as MaibornWolff and several private donors, which has made our regenerative model farm possible. However, to expand our work and fully realize connected projects, additional funding is needed. We invite you to join us in promoting sustainable practices that benefit both communities and the environment.

Expanding the
farm

Expanding the farm,
building a greenhouse, and creating a seedbank costs around 5000€.

Organizing workshops

Organizing one regenerative agriculture workshop for the community costs around 500€.

Offering gardening courses

One course on rooftop farming costs around 2000€.

Let’s join forces to promote sustainable farming practises and help the soil to regenerate!

Each contribution makes a difference and helps creating change where it’s needed most. Especially regular donations help us to grow – the farm, the impact and perspectives.

Your donation goes to the Munich based Long Yang NGO – supporting Akasha Academy NGO in Nepal.
